ISU Minutes
by Diane Losure
23 January, 2008
Chiang Mai, Thailand: The International Student Union met Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 P.M. in Aj. Jessica Loh’s office. The following are the minutes as recorded by Diane Losure during the meeting.
Welcome to everyone for coming—especially to the new people who are joining.
Restructuring of Student Union
We are currently restructuring Student Union to be different than it was last semester. Each person will hold only one position. We hope this will be more effective than last semester. A big thanks to Ken for beginning a draft of the ISU Handbook as a guideline for Student Unions to come after us.
There will be a monthly meeting for everyone that will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of EVERY month. This will be an opportunity for everyone to catch up on what is going on with the other committees and a chance for everyone to voice their problems, make suggestions, etc.
There are two main subcommittees: Academic Committee and Activities Committee. Both will hold meetings as needed. Anita is in charge of the Activities committee which includes: Mike, Kara, Saif, Lenny. Cameron is in charge of the Academic Committee which includes: Smith, Abi, Rachel, Max, and a Thai Studies Rep (which we are currently looking for someone to fill the position.)
Please note that just because you are not "part of that committee" you can always go to the people in charge and help out. Especially as events come up!!!
As soon as the ISU manual is complete, Diane will send or give everyone a copy.
New Positions—Voting
Treasurer—Tom
He is interested in this position because he feels he can contribute a lot to our Student Union. He also has experience from his high school as treasurer of the math club.
Head of Activities—Mike
He is interested in this position because he feels he will be good at it. He has a lot of experience planning and organizing parties. Also, he likes to bake cookies for Ken. Saif will be working alongside with Mike as Events Coordinator.
(Both positions were voted on unanimously)
Acknowledgement of new major representatives:
CIS Rep—Smith
IHM Rep—Max
EC Rep—Abi
IBM Rep—Rachel
The questionnaire Diane is working on was mentioned. The purpose is to find out how many people would be interested in forming a club and what kind of clubs these would be. Also what kind of activities students are interested in. Veronica is interested in starting up a photography club as well as Tom is interested in started up a chess club. The questionnaire should be done this week. Diane needs two or three people to help pass out these surveys. If you are interested in helping please contact her.
Also, if anyone is interested in writing an article for the newsletter for Mark or just helping him out, please contact him as well.
Rak Payap Party—Lenny and Ploy
The voting that is taking place is for ISU to join the main Student Union of Payap. For the past 3 years an International College Rep has been part of the council. If our party wins we have a voice and a seat on the council. So February 13th will be the voting. Our candidate is Lenny for now. He will later be replaced by Ploy or Denny.
A suggestion was made that if we win and get a seat on the council, we should keep a notebook about the stuff that goes on in those meetings. That way when the new person takes over they will have an idea of what is going on already.
Another suggestion was to meet with the new Thai Student Union after their elections are held and have a get together or a BBQ of some kind to get to know each other
Events that are coming up
Valentine's Fundraiser!!!
We are planning to sell cards and roses to students to show their appreciation and love to their fellow students and teachers. The plan is to have three point people (Jess, Anita, and Diane) to sell the Valentine's so we can keep better track of the money and be more organized than the Halloween Scaranade. Student Union members will deliver the cards and roses. We need help delivering cards and roses to people. Right now Saif, Kara, and Diane said they will help. If anyone else is interested please talk to Diane. Our goal is to have adverts ready and out by 1 st February. Mike is planning to schedule a meeting with the Activities committee for next week. Anyone who is interested in helping plan this needs to talk to him. Kara will write up the proposal of the event and give that to Jess.
Brief overview of events for the rest of the semester
March: (all events will be held after midterms) International Sports Day and Paintball (suggestion of a student interested in having something organized.)
April: Camping Trip to ___________ (need to work out where. One of the questions on the questionnaire will give the students three options of where they would like to go: Pai, Khun Than (Freshy Camp Place), or Doi Angkhang.
May: End of year Luau
Anyone interested in helping Mike in anyway please talk to him. Mike is the point person to go for about events or to help for events. And if you have an event that you'd like to do or anything you'd like to post you can always talk to Mark, Kendall, Victor, or Dave about that and they can help you make something and get that out.
The BULLETIN BOARD is here!!!! We need people to help decorate this! The theme is Valentine's Day. You can talk to Anita or Victor or Kendall about this.
Also, VERY IMPORTANT:
Diane needs a picture of everyone from Student Union (around passport size but please NOT a passport picture—we want you to look happy and smiling and glad you are representing ISU) as soon as possible. These will be posted on the bulletin board so people know who to go to when they need someone to talk to.
Mark's meeting with Dr. Rux (edited by Mark Hefner)
Mark had a meeting recently with Dr. Rux who is the Vice President for Education Quality Development and also the Assistant to the President of International Affairs. Their meeting was about little projects that they could start under Payap and supervised by an academic advisor that would be like a mini-business where you can earn some money. Payap supervision and would help to keep the foreigners on the legal side of the law as individual business ventures on are illegal for students with an education visa. The Thai side of the university already has similar programs that are in existence.
Mark isn't sure how the money works. He's not sure if you are paid in cash or given credit to your school tuition. Dr. Rux is currently working out the details on how this program will work.
This could be a good experience for those who would like to give a try at business. Because it's better to fail/succeed now on the small scale and get some experience before we get out there in the real world. Like any new program, there will be things that work and things that don’t. We will work through these problems as they arise and build on our success to make this an exciting program that will be available to all international students who want to participate.
If anyone has any ideas and want to start something Mark can help you talk to Dr. Rux. Any other questions you can ask Mark.
