The Master of Arts in Linguistics program is a minimum of 1 1/2 years course work and 1 year for the thesis. The average completion time is 3 1/2 years.

Preparatory Courses
Preparatory courses are offered by the Linguistics Department at an advanced undergraduate level. Preparatory course credits may not be applied to the 48 credits required for the M.A. degree.
Core Courses
All students must complete the six (6) core courses, for a total of 18 credits.
Elective Courses
Students following Plan A2 (Thesis) must choose six (6) elective courses, for a total of eighteen (18) credits. Students following Plan B (Independent Study and written comprehensive examination) must select eight (8) elective courses, for a total of twenty-four (24) credits. Students will select electives appropriate to their program of study in consultation with their faculty advisor.
Final Paper
Each student must submit a final paper, according to the study plan they have chosen. Special Project papers must be of publishable quality, but they have more flexibility of form and substance than theses.
