Agreement in Matu

Like other Kuki-Chin languages, Matu has a system of particles accompanying verbs which show agreement with the subject and object. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Matu agreement system. There is no generally accepted Matu orthography; the examples discussed are taken from Pathen Awl Ciim Awlkhueh Thaai (The New Testament in Matu (Chin), Bible Society of Myanmar, 2005) and cited in the orthography used there.

Catching Fish with Two Hands: Teaching English and Promoting Lawa language Use at Bo Luang School

English speaking linguistic researchers in Asia are often requested to help teach English in local communities. The following paper briefly describes my personal endeavour to fulfil this request at Bo Luang School, Chiang Mai, Thailand, and to promote the community’s indigenous language at the same time. A Thai proverb which can be translated as Catching Fish with Two Hands describes my desire to attain both goals and I have used it as the title for this paper.

So Orthography Committee and Revision Process

Members of the So-speaking community in Kusuman district of Sakon Nakhon province have a desire to preserve their language, especially through writing. This paper seeks to document and analyze the process of a So committee working together with a linguistic consultant who is familiar with the So language.

Lexical Similarity in Pwo Karen

One survey instrument used in language assessment is word lists. The analysis of these word lists involves consistently grouping phonetically similar words with the same meaning in order to determine lexical similarity. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this word list analysis process with Pwo Karen word lists. Starting with the words chosen for word list analysis, each step is illustrated, including the removal of syllables extraneous to the concept of interest and an account of the adjustments made for Pwo Karen to a modified Blair method developed for isolating languages. Finally, the application of the counting method is illustrated with several language examples. As well, all data and background information for the lexical similarity decisions are included in several appendices.

วิธภาษาต่าง ๆ ของภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปว์ในประเทศไทย โดยเฉพาะที่พูดทางภาคเหนือ จัดอยู่ในกลุ่มภาษาย่อยโปว์ของภาษากะเหรี่ยง ซึ่งเป็นสาขาหนึ่งของตระกูลภาษาทิเบต-พม่า (Bradley 1997) มีผู้พูดภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปว์ทั้งในประเทศเมียนมาร์และประเทศไทย รายการคำเป็นเครื่องมือสำรวจประเภทหนึ่งที่ใช้สำหรับตรวจสอบภาษา การวิเคราะห์รายการคำมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับการจัดกลุ่มคำอย่างสม่ำเสมอ โดยคำที่นำมาจัดกลุ่มต้องมีความคล้ายคลึงกันทางเสียงและมีความหมายเหมือนกัน การจัดกลุ่มคำดังกล่าวมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อตัดสินความคล้ายคลึงกันทางคำศัพท์ในภาษา บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะแสดงกระบวนการวิเคราะห์รายการคำโดยใช้รายการคำภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปว์ รวมทั้งแสดงขั้นตอนต่าง ๆ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยการเลือกคำสำหรับบรรจุไว้ในรายการคำ การตัดพยางค์ที่อยู่นอกขอบเขตการศึกษาออก และการปรับรายการคำภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปว์ให้เหมาะสมกับวิธีการของแบลร์ที่ผ่านการปรับเปลี่ยนเพื่อใช้คำนวณความคล้ายคลึงทางคำศัพท์ซึ่งวิธีการดังกล่าวได้รับการพัฒนาเพื่อใช้กับภาษาคำโดด นอกจากนี้ในบทความยังจะแสดงข้อมูลทั้งหมด รวมทั้งความรู้พื้นฐานที่ใช้สำหรับการตัดสินความคล้ายคลึงกันทางคำศัพท์ไว้ในภาคผนวกด้วย

Omkoi Pwo Karen Phonology and Orthography

Throughout the years 2003 - 2006, the Non-Formal Education Department (NFE) of the Thai Ministry of Education carried out an experimental multilingual education project with the Northern Pwo Karen of southern Omkoi district, Chiang Mai province, Thailand. This paper provides a review of the orthography that was used for the NFE multilingual education project. After a general introduction to the Northern Pwo Karen and the NFE multilingual education project, linguistic and sociolinguistic factors related to the use of both the NFE and the original N. Pwo Karen orthographies are discussed. The following record of the phonology of Omkoi Pwo Karen younger speakers illustrates that there indeed is some sound change in progress among the Northern Pwo Karen. Finally, the NFE orthography, based on contemporary southern Omkoi Pwo Karen, is compared with the Northern Pwo Karen orthography and issues with the NFE orthography are discussed.

ระหว่างปี 2546 – 2549 สำนักงานส่งเสริมการศึกษานอกระบบและการศึกษาตามอัธยาศัย (กศน.) กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ดำเนินโครงการการศึกษาแบบพหุภาษาเชิงทดลองกับกะเหรี่ยงโปเหนือ ทางตอนใต้ของอำเภออมก๋อย จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ประเทศไทย งานวิจัยนี้พิจารณาระบบการเขียนที่ใช้ในโครงการการศึกษาแบบพหุภาษาของ กศน. โดยกล่าวถึงข้อมูลเบื้องต้นเกี่ยวกับกะเหรี่ยงโปเหนือและโครงการการศึกษาแบบพหุภาษาของ กศน. พร้อมทั้งอภิปรายถึงปัจจัยทางภาษาศาสตร์และภาษาศาสตร์สังคมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการใช้ระบบการเขียนของ กศน. และระบบการเขียนดั้งเดิมของภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปเหนือ ระบบเสียงของภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปอำเภออมก๋อยในผู้พูดวัยรุ่นแสดงให้เห็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเสียงที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปเหนือ งานวิจัยนี้ยังได้เปรียบเทียบระบบการเขียนของ กศน. ซึ่งมีพื้นฐานจากภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปทางตอนใต้ของอำเภออมก๋อยในปัจจุบันกับระบบการเขียนภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปเหนือ พร้อมทั้งอภิปรายประเด็นปัญหาที่เกี่ยวกับระบบการเขียนของ กศน. ด้วย
