The Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS) is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research institute offering study abroad programs focusing on three main areas: human rights and politics, economic development and business, and the cultures and societies of Southeast Asia. There is a particular focus on the five countries of mainland Southeast Asia, which are Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
ISEAS traces its history to Payap’s original Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Program (est. 1987). Presently, ISEAS offers courses year round and has hosted students from North and South America, Asia and Africa. This one or two-semester academic programs are anchored in required Thai language and introduction to Thai society courses. The program provides additional electives in the social sciences and the arts, as well as advanced language study. Through village home stays, field trips, and cultural and service activities, students learn about Thailand and its people through direct contact, integrating in classroom and outside the class room learning.
ISEAS also oversees other university offices, such as the Office of International Campus Life which coordinates campus activities and student development programs, the Payap Study Abroad Program which facilitates outbound exchange study opportunities for Payap students, and the Global Honors Program unit (launched in 2011) which presents academic seminars on global issues for Payap honor students.
ISEAS faculty members and staff are committed to furthering both global and regional awareness of issues affecting the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) among students at Payap University and the larger community. Through the programs of its various units, ISEAS aims to equip students and emerging scholars with the tools, both academic and experiential, to understand the past, the present, and the future of Southeast Asia.
We are located on Payap's main Mae Khao campus on the first floor of the Pentecost Building. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
