And yet until the early 19th century they were the ‘unknown people’ because they had no written language to reveal records of their origin or identity. The dearth of written language did not, however, make the Karen a people without history or culture. There existed a great tradition of bard literature, which encompassed hundreds of legends, folklore, mythical stories, epics, poems, idioms, proverbs, riddles and rhymes. Many of these were in the form of poetic verses called “hta” in Karen and were usually recited at length at weddings, funerals and on festive occasions. These hta were taught by learned elders to selected youths who they considered reliable enough to orally transmit them to the next generation exactly the way they were taught.

Interestingly, the American missionaries were the first to discover the Karen bard literatures in the 19th century. By translating many of these works into English, they introduced the previously unknown Karen people to the academic arena. Since then, these translations have become a rich source for scholars in their attempt to describe the historical, social and cultural patterns of the Karens. Yet many of these works remain to be translated and there are more Karen traditions to be discovered.

This paper attempts to unveil the Karen mythical and historical past through these legends, folklores, proverbs, riddle and rhymes, among which includes the mystery of how and why the Karen called themselves, “Bwa K’Nyaw.” webms_ic@payap.ac.th Events
